Default Axis Spontaneously Flipping

Greetings all,
I have an old Cybermation CNC router here at my work that had been retrofitted by Multicam several years ago. A while back I had problems with my x-axis changing direction on me. It was the strangest thing, It would be cutting just fine, then suddenly it would mirror the x-axis and end up trashing whatever I was working on. I noticed the stepper motor on that axis was particularly hot (160F), so I figured the motor was messed up. I got 3 used motors like mine (Superior Electric Slo-Syn KML092F-102) and replaced the original and went back to work. As the months passed the new(used) motor began to show the same signs and I replaced it as well, 3 times in fact. Now I am out of motors and not sure that they are necessarily the problem, they will work for some time and they especially go haywire whenever the machine travels past 96" on the x-axis.
So I posted in another CNC forum and they said that the motor itself can't be the problem because it does not choose directions, it just receives the voltage its given. Furthermore they said it was probably a short in my wires leading to the motor. So I replaced the wires and the problem remained. I was wondering what you guys think? Right now I'm staring at a hunk of useless metal with jobs piling up so any help at all would be much appreciated...
Many Thanks,
Jasper
